Knitting signifies able hands that produce homespun one-of-a-kind items. During the American War for Independence, this home industry was an economic responsibility shouldered by women that helped define America’s independence from British economic dominance. Now, home is the new office and knitting once again signals a visible shift toward domesticity. We favor the homespun, value intimacy over anonymity, privilege quality over quantity, and find integrity in the sustainable and utilitarian.
